Maldivian economy can improve if earnings can be retained: Mulay

Indian High Commissioner D.M. Mulay has said that the Maldivian economy can improve if earnings are prevented from leaving the country.

Mulay made this statement while addressing senior Police officers at a forum on Nation Building and Democracy at Iskandar Building yesterday.

He said that Maldives is blessed with natural beauty, attractive to tourists, and a large percentage of Maldivians are educated; which means the country’s economy can improve if earnings can be retained.

Noting that democracy in Maldives is still in its infancy, Mulay said that if Maldivians can cooperate with each other, Maldives can become the best country in South Asia.

Mulay highlighted India’s experience in its journey to democracy after independence from the British, and said that despite being divided into numerous states, Indians worked together for the sake of the nation.

He mentioned Japan as an example of a country which owes its development to cooperation and discipline, and remarked on the solidarity of the Japanese in rebuilding the nation after the tsunami.

The workshop was attended by Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz, Deputy Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed, and several other senior Police officers. Mulay answered their questioned at the forum.
