Vice President Mohamed Waheeddeen has said that no good result can be achieved by talking about the past.
The VP made this statement while speaking at the ceremony to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in K. Himmafushi.
He stressed, however, the importance of learning from past experiences.
Deen said that if a country loses its reputation in the eyes of the rest of the world, and becomes a dangerous, criminal place, it would be difficult to change the international community’s image of the country.
He noted that bad news spreads fast, whereas it is hard to inform the outside world of positive or good news.
While stressing the importance given by the government to drug-related issues, he said that the true benefits of rehabilitation can be achieved only if the kinds undergoing rehabilitation come out as productive, useful individuals.
The VP said that the true economic loss arising from the money spent by the government on drug rehabilitation is unknown. He noted that having to spend tax money on such issues is a great economic loss for the country.
He reminded that it is the responsibility of everyone in the society who can afford to offer assistance, to free the country of drug problems.
He said that it is not the responsibility of one political party to save the country from drugs; rather, all political parties must cooperate in overcoming such challenges faced by the nation.
