Energy Authority reports that aluminum cables aren’t safe for use given environmental factors of Maldives such as high percentage of salt in the air.
Energy Authority, on Friday, recommended that Maldivians use copper cables instead of aluminum cables.
The authority said that aluminum cables had a comparatively shorter lifespan, and required more maintenance work.
“We note that there isn’t any systemic arrangement to ensure necessary maintenance work on aluminum cables is carried out, given the state of the country. Therefore, there is a higher risk that use of aluminum cables may lead to dangerous incidents,” said Energy Authority.
The authority appealed to all those concerned to ensure the safety and security of electricity provided in the country – both to people’s property and possessions as well as their life.
Negligence in adhering to the rules and regulations set by Energy Authority regarding electricity services in Maldives have led to tragic fires which have left dozens homeless.
