Visam sentenced to death for Aruham’s murder

Criminal Court has sentenced 19-year-old Mohamed Visam (Laamu Maavah) to death for the murder of the Dharumavantha School student, Mohamed Aruham who was murdered in Lorenzo Park in 2012.

At the sentencing hearing held tonight, the verdict said that Visam was found guilty based on the evidence presented and the witness testimonies.

The verdict said that some of the witnesses provided by the state testified in court that they saw Visam attacking the murder victim while others testified that they saw him going into Lorenzo Park.

Aside from Visam, 25-year-old Mansoor Yousuf (L. Maavah), 19-year-old Mohamed Sufuyan (G.Dh. Gaddhoo and 21-year-old Athif Rasheed (Malé Rasheed) were charged in the crime.

The verdict said that the state did not present sufficient evidence against the other three for a conviction.

Proceedings of the Case:

• Victim Mohamed Aruham was found dead inside Lorenzo Park in June 2012

• Charges pressed against four suspects

• Case goes to trial on 1 November 2012

• All four suspects go into a plea of not guilty

• Defense Witnesses presented to negate charges

• Hearings in the trial ended on 9 March 2016

Father of the victim, Abdul Gafoor Ali said that if proven guilty, he wants to pursue the death sentence.
