LGA decides on qualifications to receive rank of City

Local Government Authority (LGA) has decided the qualifications required for an island to be considered as a city.

An announcement made on the Government Gazette last Thursday said that an island, area or ward receiving the rank of a city must be able to provide services worthy of a city.

The qualifications require resources for social and religious expression being present along with the resources for health and education. And the location needs to have land and/or sea transportation systems accessible. It would also require having air transportation service close by.

LGA said that the said area needs to have compatible social, economic and industrial opportunities and have a sustainable productivity line compared to the national standard to be considered a City.

The only two titled cities in the country right now are Malé City and Addu City. But after the LGA voting next January, Gnaviyani Fuvahmulah would also become a city.
