Dr. Majeed confirmed as suspect arrested in Sri Lanka with large sum of USD

Sun Media has confirmed that the individual arrested yesterday in Sri Lanka with a large sum of USD was the former Islamic Minister, Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baaree.

Dr. Majeed was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport sometime yesterday evening as he was going to depart to the Maldives.

Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror reported that USD 45,000 (MVR 691,200) was found hidden in the bag of the Maldivian arrested at their main airport.

According to the Customs Laws of Sri Lanka, a special permit is required to carry over USD 5000 (MVR 76,800) out across their border.

The former Islamic Minister on an Adhaalath Party slot during the MDP government, Dr. Majeed joined MDP in 2013. He left MDP and rejoined Adhaalath Party in June 2015.
