Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Mohamed Shainee has barraged former Minister of Foreign Affairs and daughter of former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Dhunya Maumoon in a strong verbal attack, calling her a ‘failure’.
Shainee made the strong comments in response to a question by a reporter during a SanguTV program on Wednesday night, regarding a tweet made by Dhunya the previous day.

Dhunya, who resigned from her post in July over differences of opinion regarding the implementation of capital punishment, had tweeted that, “In order to reach greater heights, in order to achieve a prosperous future; Positive changes that the country and its people desire are important.”
When questioned regarding the Presidential Election 2008 campaign catchphrases used in the tweet and the criticism of the current government by Maumoon’s family members and supporters, Shainee said that what Maumoon’s campaign to maintain presidency back in 2008 had been a failure.
He said that Dhunya was on the side of failure if she, too, was echoing the same words, and said that she, herself, was a failure.
“What you mention, back in 2008, is a failure. While Dhunya is out echoing the same words, she is on the side of failure. Then. I have nothing to say regarding anything being done by holding that as example. She couldn’t be brave enough to work with us. She resigned and left. It’s a failure. I don’t want to stand here and talk about someone who is a failure,” said Shainee.
He said that Maumoon did not fall from power because his contributions were unappreciated, but rather because the people felt the need for a democratic change given his long tenure as president.
He said that the current Maldivian President Yameen Abdul Gayoom – Maumoon’s half-brother – was nothing like him, and that he had made greater contributions within his two years than Maumoon had been able to accomplish within 30 years.
Shainee implied that Cabinet ministers of previous governments had had their posts handed over to them, and said that the current Cabinet ministers of President Yameen’s government had worked their way into the position through hard work.
“Trust us. Trust us. So we are ready to shed our blood in our positions to protect President Yameen,” said Shainee.
