Guards save death row convict Murrath from suicide

Maldives Correctional Service employees have saved death row convict Ahmed Murrath after he hung himself in an apparent suicide attempt.

Murrath lost the last stage of appeal this year – and awaits execution after he was sentenced to death in the murder of popular lawyer and author – Ahmed Najeeb.

He is being kept imprisoned in in K. Maafushi Prison.

An official from Maldives Correctional Service has confirmed Murrath attempted suicide on Saturday night, but that the prison staffs were able to save his life.

“Correctional Service staffs saved him after he was found with a bed sheet tied around his neck. We took him to Maafushi Health Center to check for injuries and the doctor said he had none,” said Lugmaan.

“There’s nowhere to hang in there. He just had the bed sheet around his neck,” said Lugmaan.

Najeeb was murdered on July 1, 2012 by Murrath and his lover using a knife.

Murrath confessed to tying Najeeb up and then fatally stabbing him the neck when he started making noise both during interrogation and during the trial held at Criminal Court, but later denied it during appeal at High Court.
