Lawmaker: No documentation of Dr. Afrasheem’s murder investigation with police

Vilifushi MP Riyaz Rasheed has said that no police institution had any documentation of the investigation into murder of politician and scholar – Dr. Afrasheem Ali - and that they had lost all documentation.

Speaking during the debate on amendment to freedom of assembly at People’s Majlis sitting on Monday, MP Riyaz Rasheed said that the services provided by Maldives Police Service to the people of the country were commendable.

He then went on to say that MPS did not have any documentation of Dr. Afrasheem’s murder investigation from the time Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Riyaz had been in charge.

“Police, today, do not have any documentation of Afrasheem’s case when Abdulla Riyaz had been Commissioner. This is of immense concern,” said Riyaz Rasheed.

He said that it was disgraceful the way some retired military and police officials defamed the institutions they worked for.

“All rights, security and other protections and incentives by the State needs to stop the moment they go out to the field of politics,” said Riyaz Rasheed.

He said that fellow lawmaker, Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz was someone who needed to be “captured and arrested”.

Abdulla Riyaz had said during the debate that every administration exploited the police to achieve political objectives.
