Elections Commission (EC) has been given the former Jamaaluddin School building for use during the upcoming local elections.
The building, which was most recently used to run some classes of Maldives National University, was emptied out on January 11 due to safety concerns.
Member of EC, Ahmed Akram spoke to “Sun” on Thursday and confirmed that authorities had
provided the building for their use during the upcoming local elections.
“Government provides a place for us every election. We were previously given halls from Dharubaaruge. But have been given the former Jamaalluddin building this time,” said Akram.
Akram said that the building would help increase transparency due to its vast size.
He said that most of the Commission’s work would be carried out from the building.
The local elections is scheduled to be held in January, 2017.
