Military officers including Nasheed’s bodyguard and his brother arrested

Military officers – including former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed’s bodyguard – Ahmed Fathaah and his brother – Sergeant Mohamed Fawwaz have been arrested.

Fawwaz is one of the two military officers who skydived during celebrations to mark the country’s 50th Independence Day in 2015.

Family of Fathaah and Fawwaz reported that the two officers were arrested on Wednesday, but said they did not know the reason for their arrest.

Sources within the military reported to “Sun” that total seven of their officers were being kept detained within military headquarters in Male’.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Defense Force announced Wednesday night that military officers were barred from meeting any politician and participating in any social gatherings held by politicians without express permission from superiors.

Ministry of Defense Force announced that military officers needed to “remain free of all influence and political activities.”

Military officers have been barred from meeting:

• Cabinet ministers

• Officials elected by President

• Any electoral candidate

• Political leaders

• Activists

• Diplomats

• Foreign military officers

• And other foreign officials
