“No light on any road. Not at the harbor. 60 percent of the houses does not (have electricit). No shop has (any electricity).” Abbas said.
He said that due to the black out, the people of the island are in poor condition, unable to fulfill basic needs. While some has lit lamps, others are on the streets with their small children according to Abbas.
The island lost power due to a problem with the 300kW generator. The other two generators used in the island are 112 kW and 160 kW.
Velidhoo has about 2350 people registered in the island and the people of the island say that it needs a generator of 400 kW.
FENAKA Corporation is currently working to fix the generator and it is currently unclear when the power will be restored in the island.
