MUO: Jameel will return when President Yameen is arrested

Maldives United Opposition (MUO) has said that although the President of MUO, the former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has been ordered to appear at the Police, he would only return to the country when President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been arrested.

Police ordered the self-exiled former VP and the former State Minister of the Home Ministry Akram Kamaaludheen to appear at the Police station in 14 days in relation to the false court order to arresting President Yameen.

A statement issued by the MUO today said that Jameel is ready to cooperate with the Police but he would return once President Yameen has been arrested for money laundering and corruption based on official documents and evidence.

Indicating to the corruption case of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation, the MUO statement called to the Police to refrain from being part of the government effort to ease political rivalry from the country and arrest President Yameen for embezzling state funds.

The statement said that it is relatively few Police officers that are taking part in the attacks against political rivals.

MUO also condemned the government’s Anti-defamation bill to narrow the constitutional right to freedom of expression through the Parliament and called to the Police to not be part of the government’ political agenda to erase political rivalry and free media.

Maldives Police Service has previously said that earlier attempt by police to hand over the letter summoning them for questioning was foiled as both Dr. Jameel and Akram Kamalluddin are out of the country.

The Police also warned that they would take necessary legal action if they failed to present themselves within the given time period.
