MP Musthafa kicked from PPM Viber Group

MP for the Thimarafushi constituency, Mohamed Mustafa has been kicked out of the Viber Group of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The MP has confirmed that he has been kicked from the group to Sun Media.

Mustafa said that he was kicked from the group for raising his concerns regarding the Anti-Defamation and Freedom of Expression bill today on the Viber Group.

“I said that it’s not about passing an anti-defamation bill. But as the state of judiciary in the country right now, there are unfair advantages that could be taken. And as such, this threat is there for Members (of Parliament) as well. I talked like that from a different angle with facts.” MP Mustafa said.

He said that an Anti-Defamation bill is important but it should not be passed into a law in such a way that it “murders the freedom of pen and tongue.” The MP said that the bill should be passed in a way that a country does not go into turmoil and a large portion of the people end up in prison.

“Even I know there are people doing such things. But I, for sure, have not done such a thing. Now I have convinced them of that as well. They would believe it.” MP Mustafa said.

MP Mustafa was previously kicked out of the PPM Viber Group last October for speaking against the PPM draft for impeaching then-Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor and was accused of trying to create conflict within the party.
