The Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary General, Dr. Willy Mutunga assigned to the Maldives to promote democracy and establish a sustainable inter-party talks has left the Maldives after completing his visit to the Maldives.
Special Envoy Dr. Mutunga arrived in the Maldives on 31 July upon the invitation of the Maldivian government on a five-day visit and met with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, political parties, the opposition coalition Maldives United Opposition (MUO) and other high ranking officials of the state.

The President requested the Commonwealth for an emissary of the Commonwealth to the Maldives to observe and help strengthen democracy, human rights and the judiciary in the Maldives.
And so the recently retired Chief Justice of Kenya, Dr. Willy Mutunga was assigned to the position last June.
Dr. Mutunga has previously said that his goal is to unite the political figures in the Maldives and create a platform for communications between political leaders. And make the 2018 Presidential Election an independent and free election where anyone can take part in.
