Special Envoy of Commonwealth calls the President Yameen

Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary General, Dr. Willy Mutunga paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning at the President’s Office.

The Maldivian government has repeatedly requested assistance from the Commonwealth in developing the national institutes and the democracy in the country.

The former Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon requested a special envoy of the Commonwealth to the Maldives to strengthen democracy in the Maldives at the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) meeting in late February 2016.

At the meeting today, President Yameen welcomed Dr. Willy Mutunga to the Maldives and expressed his gratitude for accepting the role of the Special Envoy. And the two discussed areas of further cooperation between the Maldives and the Commonwealth.

The President was accompanied at the courtesy call by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim, Minister for Legal Affairs of the President’s Office, Aishath Azima Shakoor and Foreign Secretary, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed along with the Under Secretary at the President’s Office, Mr. Mohamed Naseer.

Until his recent retirement on 14 June 2016, Dr. Willy Mutunga was the Chief of Justice of the Republic of Kenya.
