Court cancels petition against PPM

Civil Court has cancelled the petition filed against ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) by two lawmakers of the same party – Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam and Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid after they failed to show up in court.

Civil Court cancelled the petition form filed by the two MPs on Monday.

The Court said that it had informed the proxies of the two MPs to attend the court on Monday at 10:30 am, but that they had failed to attend the court, providing no reasonable explanation in return.

The Court said that it had therefore made the decision to cancel the petition form in accordance with Article 29 (a) of regulation on court attendance.

MP Shiyam and MP Shahid filed the petition requesting the court declare PPM Leader, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s reform agenda for the party invalid.

PPM was thrown into turmoil after differences manifested between Maumoon and President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom - who contested the Presidential Election as PPM's candidate - leading to a divide within the party.
