Some taxes to be forgiven in the MUO government

Leader of the Maldives United Opposition (MUO) coalition, former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that some of the taxes being taken now would be forgiven in a government of the MUO.

Speaking at an MUO function last night through video call from the UK, Dr. Jameel said that the MUO government would “allow guesthouses breathe” and remove some of the taxes.

He said that the coalition was formed to bring changes to the country and in an MUO government, the country won’t be falling behind.

Dr. Jameel also criticized the recent amendment passed to the Tourism Law to lease islands without an open bid.

He said that an MUO government would retract the change to lease islands without bids for resort development.

The former Vice President said that with God’s Will all the money stolen from major projects through corruption would be returned to the government and the law would catch up to those responsible.

Deputy Leader of the MUO and MDP Chairperson, Ali Waheed also spoke at the event last night saying that the rights assured by the Constitution and the Judiciary have been lost in the country.

Ali Waheed said that all the political leaders that are needed to regain the rights have “disappeared” and the people can’t even dream of a just verdict from the judiciary.

With the ten percent duty from fuel, Ali Waheed said that prices have gone up 25 percent and the price of housing has multiplied.
