Ruling, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Council has scheduled an emergency meeting for this Tuesday night amid inner conflicts.
PPM office has sent messages to PPM council members, asking them to attend for the meeting at 9 pm.
A member of PPM Council who spoke to “Sun” said that they had not been informed of the reason or agenda for the emergency meeting yet.
PPM leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has now rescinded his decision to order for all PPM committee meetings to be held with his personal permission, and asked all PPM bodies to continue business as usual in accordance with the constitution of the party.
Maumoon’s decision drew controversy with PPM Deputy Leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Parliamentary Group leader MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik and other PPM lawmakers saying that Maumoon could not make such a decision without the backing of PPM Council.
PPM Disciplinary Committee had made the decision to remove MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon, Council member Aminath Nadhira and Male’ City Council member Zaidul Ameen from the party, in spite of Maumoon’s orders not to hold any committee meeting without his permission.
Disciplinary Committee has requested with Council to enforce its decision to remove the members from the party after Deputy Secretary-General of the party rejected it, saying that proper procedure had not been followed in the matter.
Faris, Nadhira and Zaidul Ameen are all Maumoon loyalists.
Maumoon recently announced a reform agenda for the party, saying that members within the party were not following PPM Constitution and was pushing their own personal agendas ahead of the party and the country.
