Rakeedhoo Council expresses concern over damage to reef, boat wrecked on reef for over a week

V. Rakeedhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the potential damage, more than one week after a private cargo boat has been wrecked on the island’s reef.

President of Rakeedhoo Council, Adam Samy spoke to “Sun” on Monday and said that the private cargo boat which belongs to Leo Private Limited had been travelling with cargo from

Addu to Male’ when it wrecked on the reef to south of Rakeedhoo.

Samy said that both the council and locals of the island acknowledge and appreciated the effort made by Leo Private Limited to haul the boat, but said that the effort was resulting in distress to the reef.

He said that an excavator was being used for the effort, resulting in damage to the reef.

Samy said that a complaint had been lodged with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and police, but that no solution had been found yet.

“We called EPA. They say they will come here. But no news yet. We have also informed the police,” said Samy.
