Heavy rain leads to severe flooding in Holhudhoo

Heavy rain has caused severe flooding in N. Holhudhoo, resulting in flood water entering households and damaging property.

Locals from the island report that the island faces flooding every time it rains heavily as the island dips at the middle.

President of Holhudhoo Island Council, Mayiz Mohamed said that it had been raining non-stop since 9:45 am, this Saturday. And that flood water was now entering households.

“Flood water has gone into some houses. Now most of the houses in this island are built high up. So this means water is entering houses because it’s quite severe,” said Mayiz.

He said that sacks of sand had been put in the entrance ways of some houses to prevent the flood water from going in.

Holhudhoo has now asked for the assistance of Maldives National Defense Force to deal with the flooding.

Mayiz noted that they had asked the authorities for a solution to the problem on numerous occasions, but had received none yet.

He said that President Abdulla Yameen had said it would be budgeted for next year, and that, that at least was of some comfort.

He said that locals were in distress over the flooding as it was getting into their homes, and making walking or any other method of land transportation difficult.
