High traffic at the Malé lagoon being used by the ferry service between Malé and Hulhumalé and Malé and Hulhulé has started leading to an increase in boat collisions in the lagoon.
Manager of Hulhumalé Ferry Operations at MTCC, Mohamed Nazim told Sun Media today that a double-deck ferry had an accident with a Hulhulé ferry today as well due to . Although no one was injured in the collision, the ferries took some damage.
He said that the plastic covering at the back of the ferry came off when the ferry hit and can be fixed with a small “small repair.”
Nazim said that the lagoon difficulties are big and the high sea swells adds to that difficulty. He said that such collision would always take place and has been reported as “incidents.”
Every day, a large number of people travel on the two ferry services that are close by.
Lagoon expansion has been discussed for months now and is awaiting a decision.
