Ibrahim “Ibra” Ismail, Advisor to the President Mohamed Nasheed, has expressed his concern over former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom’s decision to form a new political party. Ibra said that Maumoon’s decision to form a new political would do nothing but destroy the main opposition that has a duty to hold the government accountable.
Speaking in a general meeting of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held last night at K. Atoll Thulusdhoo, Ibra said that democracy would not be complete without a powerful opposition acting counter to the ruling party. He said that Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), the major opposition party as of now, would be severely weakened and disabled if Maumoon goes on to realize his plans for a new political party.
“A democracy needs an opposition party to work with the ruling side. The opposition has the responsibility of holding the ruling party accountable. If Maumoon creates a new party, that will drastically change the political scenario, and one repercussion would be the destruction of DRP which is now there to make the government accountable”, said Ibra.
Ibra did not make any comments on whether DRP has been successful or not in achieving accountability on the part of MDP government.
Last night’s meeting was named “Thulusdhoo Youth all for MDP”, and 20 persons in the island where DRP is immensely popular signed for MDP during the meeting.
