Lawyer Moosa Siraj representing the former Vice President, Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor has said that his client is still being held at Dhoonidhoo after being sentenced to 25 years in prison, following two convictions of terrorism, and that is something the Police have done against the law.
A letter from Lawyer Siraj to the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Areef said that under Article 4-A subsection 3, of the Law of Prisons and Parole, people serving out sentences must be under the custody of Maldives Correctional Service.
The letter said that the custody of Adheeb has not been handed over to the Correctional Service to carry out the sentence.
He requested, on the letter, to change the custody as soon as possible so that the rights of a person serving a sentence can also be granted once the change of custody takes place.
After receiving a ten year sentence for the possession of two pistols and explosives, former Vice President Adheeb was sentenced to 15 years for detonating an explosive on board the Presidential Launch on which President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was travelling on.
