Prices of yellowfin tuna (kanneli) and other types of tuna used in the daily diet of Maldivians have gone down again.
Fish prices in local market during the first 10 days of Ramadan was comparatively higher, this time around.
A 2-feet skipjack tuna (kalhubilamas) is being sold for MVR 100 – MBR 180 per fish.
A 2-feet fresh tuna is being sold for MVR 200 – MVR 250 per fish. It used to cost above MVR 250 last week.
Most of the yellowfin tuna (kanneli) being sold are 2-feet.
One whole yellowfin tuna is being sold for MVR 40 – MVR 75, while one sixth of a yellowfin tuna costs MVR 20.
Fisherman at the market said that fishing had improved the past two days, with yellowfin tuna and tuna available in abundant.
Availability of reef fish from the market has been low throughout Ramadan, with red snapper (raih mas) not available at all.
Gini fish, below one-foot in length, are being sold for MVR 60. This is a MVR 10 fall from the sale price at start of Ramadan.
One-foot handhi fish are being sold for MVR 150.
Octopus is being sold for MVR 80 – 150.
Mushimas (bigeye scad) is being sold for MVR 10 and a cup of rehi (silver sprat) is being sold for MVR 15.
