Mariya

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has said that the report publicised by Machchangolhi Uthuru MP Mariya Ahmed Didi is a sign that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is ready to settle issues by taking them to court, instead of taking to the streets for protests.

“What they did last night under Mariya’s leadership is very good; the government welcomes this very much. All this time, they were on the streets. They created courts on the streets. It is a very good decision by MDP to accept the judicial system of Maldives,” Abbas said.

Abbas said that he had read Mariya’s report, and that discussions will be held with relevant parties if the need arises.

“I have looked through the report. The government will discuss whether there is anything to be concerned about. The government sees this as a positive sign. This shows that they also don’t like the street courts,” Abbas said.

The report, which claims that President Waheed participated in a coup and requests the PG to litigate him, was publicised at a ceremony held at City Hall last night.

Mariya noted several legal factors in her report to prove that President Waheed was involved in the organisation of a coup.

The report states that the then Vice President Waheed met with the coalition group on 30 January at Hilaaleege, during which he assured the coalition members that he is prepared to take on his constitutional responsibility, and kept the developments of this meeting confidential.

The report further claims that no legal action has been taken thus far against those involved in throwing objects at MNDF Headquarters on 7 February, and that President Waheed is accused of having participated in a coup because the former President was forced to resign, following which President Waheed formed a unity government without holding elections.
