People who stole Police uniforms steal in those uniforms: MPs

Some Members of Parliament have said that people who stole Police and Military officers’ uniforms wear them to conduct assault and theft crimes.

Speaking on the point of order raised by MDP’s Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy that security officers harm the public and steal from them, Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdullah said that certain issues related to Police and Military are submitted to Parliament to undermine their dignity in society.

“It was MDP’s government that made the Police and Military carry our illegal activities. This is the truth, and it’s obvious. MDP stole Police and Military uniforms while they were part of the government, and now they use these to conduct crimes. This will not be tolerated,” he said.

Several pro-government MPs also condemned MDP’s attempts to undermine the authority of the Police and Military institutions.

Fares Maathoda MP Ibrahim Mutthalib said that former President Nasheed, during his rule over the past three years, attempted to destroy the Police and Military institutions, and what we observe today is the result of MDP’s attempts to organise coups in the event of the fall of the former government.

Funadhoo MP Ali Saleem said that the purpose of MDP’s campaigns to undermine the authority of the Police and Military institutions is to destroy their dignity and honour.

Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem said that debates which damage the reputation of the Police should not be allowed at the Parliament, and that Police officers were involved in theft not now, but during President Nasheed’s administration.

“Police began stealing during Nasheed’s government. Why couldn’t they put an end to this? There are Police officers who are criminals, who were released under the second chance program. The institution cannot be improved while they are still part of it. This was all planned. They were working on turning the Police institution into a gang within five years,” Saleem said.

Imthiyaz Fahmy said while presenting his argument that the Police and Military have failed in their principal responsibility to provide public security, and also to prevent crimes such as assault, stabbing, and unrest.
