Ilham Ahmed, Deputy of Leader of main opposition Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has decided to resign from his office, according to reliable sources providing information to Sun. on condition of anonymity, the source assured that Ilham would conduct a press conference today to announce his resignation as the Deputy Leader of the second-largest political party in the Maldives.
When asked about the decision, Ilham said that circumstances had rendered him remaining as the Deputy Leader of DRP meaningless. However he declined to affirm the information about his prospective resignation.
Ilham said that former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom had founded DRP as a political party that would work for noble purposes such as protection of Maldivian nationality, Islamic faith, the progress and development of the Maldivian People and ensuring a brighter future for the nation, although under the leadership of Ahmed Tasmin Ali, DRP had utterly failed to work for these goals. He also stated that DRP under Tasmin had failed to work as an effective and efficient opposition.
“What we see with Tasmin is that he is conducting various meetings with President Nasheed day in day out. He said that he would not support taxation bills proposed by Nasheed’s government. However, what we saw was that some members loyal to him “mistakenly” voted for the bills. These are funny things”, said Ilham.
Ilham said that the political condition of the country had deteriorated with time due to the actions of Tasmin, and that it was already too late for someone to stand up and take proper actions to set things right.
