Yamin says he will leave PA to join Maumoon

Abdullah Yamin, Leader of the People’s Association (PA), has said today that he will part with his own party that he founded to join the new political party to be formed by his brother Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom.

Maumoon, former President of the Maldives, during whose presidency Yamin served in his cabinet, has recently announced that he will lead the break-away Z Faction of the main opposition Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) into forming a new political party. DRP was the second political party of the Maldives, founded by Maumoon during his presidency. However, Ahmed Tasmin Ali, the current leader of DRP, has deviated from the policies of Maumoon according to some prominent leaders of DRP, who have rallied behind Maumoon in opposing Tasmin.

Speaking to Sun today, Yamin said that he will join his brother’s new party, and that he has in mind to contest in the party primary as well. However, Yamin said that becoming a presidential candidate was only of secondary importance and that the most important target now was to form the party and establish it as a strong political movement. He assured that the new party’s presidential candidate would be elected through a fully democratic process.

When asked about the time of the formation of new party, Yamin said that the process was being rolled on very fast, though he did not give an exact time.

Yamin is MP for Mulak Constituency.
