Maldives Allied Health Council has said that they have registered more than 36 psychologists so far – including medical psychologists and assistant psychologists.
Maldives Board of Health Sciences was dissolved and Maldives Allied Health Council established, requiring psychologists registered with Maldives Board of Health Sciences to re-register with Maldives Allied Health Council.
President of Maldives Allied Health Council, Ahmed Nayaz spoke to “Sun” on Saturday and said that psychology was a vast field, and that many had applied for registration.
Nayaz said that the council was carrying out registration, and that those who studied psychology and are working in the field from among those who have applied will be registered with the council, and granted permission to continue working in the field.
Those working in the mental health field have complained that many psychologists have not been registered despite applying for registration.
Tensions spiked up between the council and psychologists after the council made the decision not to grant permission for psychology bachelor’s degree holders to practice psychology.
The council has now hinted they will rescind their decision and allow bachelor’s degree holders to at least perform as assistant psychologists.
