MP for the South Galolhu constituency and spokesperson for the opposition coalition, Ahmed Mahloof said that the oppositions have started working together as the United Maldives Opposition (UMO) to bring an end to the presidency of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and overthrow him.
Talking to the press at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) upon his return from the UK after a UMO meeting in London, Mahloof said that the first order of business from the UMO is to depose President Yameen.
MP Mahloof said that although heated words have been exchanged in the past among those who have now come to the same table, the interests of the people are much more important than those problems.
He said that if the government is not changed today, there is no guarantee that the rights that are being violated can ever be acquired again.
Mahloof said that as things are now, there is no guarantee that an opposition can run in the 2018 election.
He said that the UMO wants to depose the current government and bring in Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed as the leader and bring the freedom to every leader of every political party, even the simplest independent person to be able to run in a fair, independent election.
