President Mohamed Nasheed has said that domestic airport and tourist hotel in Fuvah Mulah would be complete by November this year.
Speaking in a meeting held in Fuvah Mulah under the title “SAARC’s Contribution in the Development of Fuvah Mulah”, President Nasheed said that complains from the people of Fuvah Mulah about an airport had been a key issue for the last six years. “It has been written on walls in the island. The youth from this island have told me that they don’t need roads, drainage systems, water, medicine or education. They told me that they just need an airport. I thought that they were right, as this island is geographically disconnected from the other parts of the country, and the difficulties suffered by its people due to lack of an airport can’t really be appreciated by people like us who belong to other parts of the country like Malé”, said the President
President Nasheed said that the construction of Fuvah Mulah airport was going on well according to the plan, and that State Trading Organization and other parties which have undertaken to build it had given him assurance that the airport would be open before November 11 this year. He also said that the airport would be officially opened on the 11th of November.
President Nasheed stressed the point that a domestic airport in Fuvah Mulah would not be run profitably through the traffic of 30 traveler per week who use the airport, and that for a sustainable running of the airport, another project would have to be tied up with it. “The government has decided to build a tourist hotel in the island. The management of this hotel would be handed over to some party. Our aim is to complete both the airport as well as the hotel and hand them over to the people of Fuvah Mulah on the 10th of November this year”, the President said.
