President: Even in asylum, should not weaken where others live

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that even if one seeks asylum in a foreign country, they should understand that the Maldives is where Maldivians want to live and should not do anything that would weaken the people and the country.

Visiting the Haa Alifu Hoarafushi for the inauguration of the island’s Sewage System and the beach protection today, President Yameen said that the country is being described badly on the international stage due to the misrepresentation of the people who does not respect the thinking and regulations of Maldivians.

The President said that the people of the country was kept from the development they deserve due to the conflict created by a group of people and those people are now seeking asylum abroad.

President Yameen made the statement after the former President Mohamed Nasheed sought Political Refugee Status while in UK for a medical treatment while serving a 13-year prison sentence for terrorism.

Political Refugee Status is the protection given under the UN regulations to those who have been forced to flee from a homeland due to political persecution.

Speaking at the ceremony today, President Yameen said that the nation must be allowed to breathe if the work is for the country.
