Maldivian government has provided monetary aid to people of Sri Lanka suffering from floods and mudslides in the country on behalf of the people of Maldives in a symbolic gesture.
Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka released a press statement, saying that the money was handed over to Minister of Disaster Management of Sri Lanka, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa by Maldivian Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed in a ceremony held at Ministry of Disaster Management on Monday.
The High Commission said in their statement that the government and people of Maldives wanted to help the people of Sri Lanka in their time of need given the number of deaths and people left homeless due to the disaster.
“Sun” has been informed that Maldivian government provided a symbolic aid of USD 35,000 (MVR 539,700) to Sri Lanka.
High Commission said that the symbolic gesture was welcomed by Sri Lankan government.
Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, Abbas Adhil Riza said that in addition to the financial aid provided by Maldivian government, Maldivians living in Lanka were holding fundraising events to help the people of Sri Lanka as well as donating items such as rice, clothes, torches and umbrellas.
Death toll from the disaster in Sri Lanka now stands at 92.
109 people have been reported missing and over 180,000 people, displaced.
