Court has sent 18-year-old Mohamed Mafaz Hussein from G. Shaaraaz, Male’ – who violated the Monitor and Control order against him – to jail until end of his trial.
The MoniCon order issued by High Court upon request of Home Minister Umar Naseer against repeat offenders who are considered a threat to Maldivian society.
Anti-Terrorism Act, Article 60, states that it is a criminal offense to violate any constriction placed upon someone against whom a MoniCon order has been issued. It prescribes house arrest or jail sentence of maximum 18 months.
Court, however, has the authority to order that the offender be kept imprisoned until end of trial, if a police submit a letter to court, requesting that the offender be kept imprisoned until police finish their investigation and court proceedings are complete.
MoniCon order was pushed by government in an effort to stem gang violence and major crime in the country.
