Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar has said that government would be distributing MVR 2.6 million in cash to those effected by Coastline Hardware fire on Friday.
The minister said that government had assessed the damage to property and possessions in the fire, and that government had made the decision to cover 40 percent of the loss – which amounted to MVR 2.6 million.
In addition to the money by government, Coastline Hardware has donated MVR 1 million to the victims. And a generous civilian has donated MVR 3,000 to help the victims – which too would be distributed.
“The government made the decision to cover 40 percent of the loss. Government will provide MVR 2.6 million for the loss. In addition to this, the MVR 1 million too will be distributed proportionately,” said Adam Shareef.
He said the money would be distributed in cash on Friday.
“We are working to provide the cash to the recipients by Friday evening or night, at the latest. Administrative work to carry this out is being done now – such as verifying who the money for damage of a property should go to,” said Adam Shareef.
The minister said that government was currently hosting 47 people left homeless in the fire in various guesthouses in Male’. And that the government was currently spending over MVR 50,000 each day for their accommodation and food.
Deputy Defense Minister Fathimath Thasneem – who is in charge of National Disaster Management Center – said that though neighboring buildings had not suffered any serious damage in the fire, government was paying for their accommodation and food.
She said that 35 of the 47 people being hosted by government would soon return to their homes.
Thasneem said that money would be distributed to each household – totaling 30 households. Adding that the aid would cover the full cost of items listed as basic necessities by Disaster Management Center.
