Minister: Fire truck was brought from Hulhulé due to nature of the fire

Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar has said that the supplies from Hulhulé were brought to Malé due the Coastline fire incident due to the type of the fire.

Speaking at a press conference at the Coastguard Building today, the Defence Minister said that there were industrial grade products at Coastline when the fire broke out and the fire was difficult to control when those products caught fire.

“The foam and other products (used to fight fire) used in Malé are not things not used when an industrial level incident takes place.” Defence Minister Adam Shareef said.

Noting that a number of lessons were learned from the incident, Minister Adam Shareef said that they accept that different equipment that meets these conditions must be established in Malé City in the future.

Minister Shareef said that difficulties are faced when responding to such situations due the heavy traffic and how small the city is.

“When looking to bring in vehicles used to fight fire, the roads are blocked since vehicles are parked on both sides of the road. So if (we) want to bring in something (vehicle), first (we) have to take the parked cars and motorcycles.” Minister Adam Shareef said.

And the Minister said that the city needs to be planned in such a way that water is accessible to extinguish small fires at residences in high pressure.

And so the Government will provide a major support to the project and is ready to provide funds even within the current budget according to the Defence Minister, Adam Shareef Umar.

“Information is now being gathered on it and preparing a proposal. Government has given commitment, in getting the equipment needed in this.” Minister Shareef said.
