UK parliamentarians express concern over MDP politicians staying in UK

The issue of some top Maldivian Democratic Party members staying at UK was raised in House of Commons by parliamentarian Sir David Amess.

Amess requested for a discussion regarding foreign politicians staying in UK. And said that Maldivian High Commissioner Ahmed Shiaan had told him that the MDP members had been charged with serious criminal offenses.

“I do not have the slightest idea what they are doing here,” said Amess.

Leader of House of Commons, Christopher Stephen Grayling said that Amess had raised an important issue, and that he would work with Amess to bring it to the attention of UK Home Office and Foreign Office.

“When someone comes to this country, we need to know the purpose of their trip; who they are and what they are doing here,” said Grayling.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed – who has been sentenced to 13 years in jail, former People’s Majlis Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim – who has been given life sentence for graft have traveled to UK.

Meanwhile, MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed, Deputy leader of Jumhoory Party Ameen Ibrahim and former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed are now living in UK.
