Law to be changed to allow inquiry into cases where people possess excessive money

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has said that a revision will soon be proposed to the law to allow them to question individuals who have too much money in their possession when compared with their salaries, before they are found guilty of corruption.

President of ACC Hassan Luthfee said that according to existing laws, a person has to be found guilty of corruption before an inquiry can be made into how he obtained ownership of assets.

The revision to be proposed to the laws relating to the prevention of corruption holds individuals accountable for excessive financial transactions which do not match their salaries.

In addition, Luthfee said that in several countries, the laws require people to explain in court how his assets increased, even if he is not found guilty of corruption.

The lack of such an article in the law relating to the prevention of corruption obstructs the efforts to limit corruption in the Maldives.

Luthfee did not indicate when the revision will be proposed.
