President's advice to members: Stop defamation in the Parliament

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has asked the members of the Parliament to stop abusing their right freedom of expression at the Parliament.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the G.A. Gemanafushi Harbor, the President advised the members of the Parliament to speak humanely of the people who cannot speak to defend themselves.

According to Article 90 of the Constitution, a member of the Parliament cannot be arrested, detained, prosecuted or be under investigation for what that member say, do or vote in the Parliament as long as it does not violate a fundamental belief of the Islamic faith.

President Yameen said that the constitution assures that every citizen has the right to respond and defend their rights.

The President said that the abuse of authority reflects badly and every Maldivian citizen is equal and the people are united.

President Yameen said that he has no problem with journalists report the actions of his government in ten different ways.

"I have experienced a lot of these things. But if the rights of others are being violated, each person has to think out it with integrity." President Yameen said.

He said that while claiming that journalism is he fourth power of the state, we have to think out the responsibility of each power of the state. If that responsibility is being taken, the power would be validated.
