Maabinhuraa USD 5 mn treason case taken under judgeship of Baaree

Treason case involving the USD 5 million that should have gone to State as acquisition cost for Lh. Maabinhuraa – which was leased to be developed as a tourist resort – has been taken under the judgeship of Judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf – who is in charge of Criminal Court.

Second hearing in the case which was previously being seen over by Judge Muhuthaz Fahmy – scheduled for 2:00 pm on Wednesday was cancelled, as the case was taken over by Judge Baaree.

No judge has been chosen to oversee the case yet.

State has charged former Vice President and Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, former Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)

Abdulla Ziyath and businessman Hamid Ismail from M. Shuraa Manzil in Male’ City, in relation to the case.

Ziyath has been charged with treason for failing to hand over the USD 5 million cheque he received from Kuredu Holdings as acquisition cost for Lh. Maabinhuraa, to State.

Adeeb and Hamid have been charged with being accessories to treason, for allegedly banking the cheque in the bank account of Millennium Capital Management Private Limited on June 9, 2014.

Adeeb and Ziyath were provided 15 days to hire a lawyer during the last hearing held on the case. Hamid had already hired a lawyer to represent him.
