A powerful earthquake has hit Indonesia

A powerful earthquake close to a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 has hit parts of Sumatra island, Indonesia. The earthquake hit about half hour ago at depth of 10 kilometer below sea level according to the Maldives . The MET Office has issued a Yellow Alert for a possible tsunami and reports the earthquake as a magnitude 8.2.

There are effects of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean. And so rise of what we call a “baby tsunami” in the Indian Ocean area is reported by the Australian weather center.

MNDF is on alert for a situation where the communications could be down due to a tsunami. And regarding this, for any rescue operation in any region of the country, the Coast Guard is on alert. And in such a situation to provide medical assistance, we are fully prepared.
