Home Minister Umar Naseer has said that the former Vice President, Ahmed Adheeb attempted to bomb the opposition’s May Day rally in Malé City last year.
Speaking at the press conference by the National Inquiry Commission, Minister Umar said that the case is currently under investigation.
“Trying to create an explosion towards May Day protest is also under investigation. That too is led by Adheeb.” Home Minister Umar Naseer said.
At the press conference, the Home Minister said that the investigation has revealed that Adheeb was actively involved in the bombing of the Presidential Launch and they have enough evidence for a conviction. And he said that the former Vice President is the main suspect in the Launch explosion.
The Home Minister said that two cases aside from the Presidential Launch explosion is being investigated including the conspiracy to assassinate President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom by hiring a Sri Lankan Sniper and the IED found near the President’s Official Residence, Muliaage. Home Minister Umar Naseer said that the IED case has now been sent to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office.
He said that the case of the weapons found on Hibalhidhoo, an island leased to develop a resort, has also been sent to the PG Office to be prosecuted in relation to the Launch Explosion.
“Two types of weapons were found on Hibalhidhoo. One is guns and ammunition and the other is explosives.” Minister Umar Naseer said. “The investigation has learned that the explosives found on Hibalhidhoo and in the Presidential Launch explosion are from the same source.”
