Police denies President Nasheed’s allegations and advised not to do such things

Maldives Police Service has denied the former President Mohamed Nasheed’s words saying that there are 1700 political detainees pending trial.

A press release from the Police said today, indicating to the former President, that while some political figures say such things in foreign medias, Police statistics show that there were 109 people arrested at political rallies in the past two years for disobeying police orders, obstructing police duties, acts of terrorism, supporting such actions and talking in support of such actions. And in the same time period, the cases of 140 of people were passed to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution.

“While facts stand as such, the words of some political figures saying that there are about 1700 political prisoners awaiting trial is not based on any truth and completely false. And advise those people not to speak in such mannerism.” The Police statement said.

The Police statement said that President Nasheed has said at forums around the globe that about 200 Maldivians has joined terrorist groups in the name of Islam to take part in conflicts around the world. But the number of Maldivians who has joined terrorist organizations, even along with their families is less than half that number.

Police said that such talks affect the interests of the country and could damage the integrity and stature of the country. And such talk could affect the independence and the religious unity in the country and create conflict among the people.

The Police advised that no one give false information opposed to the state statistics and official information.
