President Nasheed has left for U.K.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has left for U.K. on a medical visit.

He left tonight at 9:15 p.m. on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight.

The Foreign Ministry said that the former President went to the U.K. for a surgery.

President Nasheed and his family have signed the relevant legal documents that are required by all who are incarcerated before leaving the country during their incarceration.

Conditions Agreed by the former President on the legal documents:

• Notifying the address and the contact number to the Correctional Service within 24 hours of arrival at the foreign country.

• Notifying any changes to the address when abroad.

• Gain approval from the Correctional Service by sending a fax of the doctor’s letter if the treatment would exceed 30 days.

• Notifying the Correctional Service with the arrival flight number, date and time after treatment.

• Acknowledging that the sentence is halted from the date of the departure and resumes from the date of return into custody.

The former President’s brother, Dr. Ahmed Naashid signed a document agreeing that if the former President is lost or escapes, he would notify the Correctional Service without delay if President Nasheed is lost or escapes with Dr. Naashid’s fault, he would be personally responsible.

Home Minister Umar Naseer said earlier that President Nasheed signed the document sometime last night as well before he tore them in front of his lawyers.
