Hugo Swire has met with President Maumoon

The Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and MP for East Devon, Hugo Swire currently visiting the Maldives has met with the former President of the Maldives and the President of the current ruling party PPM, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Swire tweeted today saying that he discussed climate change, religious extremism and local politics in a friendly meeting with the former President.

The visiting State Minister at the Foreign And Commonwealth Office has met with different political parties in the Maldives including the opposition MDP and Adhaalath Party.

Mr. Swire also paid a visit to President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom at the President’s Office today.

At his meeting with President Yamin, both sides expressed their commitment to further strengthening existing bilateral ties between the Maldives and the UK. Discussions at the meeting were also focused on exploring further areas of cooperation between the two countries.

In his tweet after the meeting with the President, he said that “concerns and opportunities” were discussed at the meeting.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dunya Maumoon, Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, and Undersecretary (Foreign Relations) at the President’s Office, Mr. Mohamed Naseer were present at the President’s meeting with Swire.
