Channel though reef to be cut from near Kalhuthukkala after land reclamation

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that channel through reef would be cut from near where Kalhuthukkala Koshi is located after land is reclaimed to southwest of Male’.

Muizzu said that the project had been handed over to MTCC, and that work on project would start next week.

“Work on west coast seawall is practically coming to an end. After that, the team will be working on the project next week,” said Muizzu.

He said the purpose of cutting a channel through reef was so ships can enter from that area and dock near STELCO.

Muizzu said it was the government’s target to complete by project by mid-2016.

“It’s over target to complete everything by July. Once the project is complete land will be reclaimed, seawall built, garbage collection area made, and trees that need to be planted on road buffer zones planted,” he said.

Housing Ministry said the project would mean workshops and garages would be moved to the new area, a solution brought to garbage management in Male’ and congestion.
