Former Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim, who is serving an 11-year prison sentence, has been taken to Malé for medical treatment.
Spokesperson for Maldives Correctional Service Moosa Zameer said that Nazim arrived in Malé this morning. He declined to comment on the reason for the doctor's visit.
Nazim’s brother Adam Azim told Sun Media that the family was informed that Nazim had been taken to Malé, but the reason is unknown.
“We are in shock. We have no idea why he has been taken to Malé. We haven’t received any information. Also, previous times he was taken to the doctor, the family was not informed by Correctional Service,” he said.
Azim added that Correctional Service has been requested to inform the family when Nazim is taken to Malé for any reason.
Nazim was sentenced to 11 years in prison on 27 March 2015 after being convicted of possession of dangerous firearms.
