Eight political parties have been disbanded after failing to raise their membership to 3000 by the end of the deadline.
Member of the Election Commission, Ahmed Akram told Sun Media today that eight political parties have been disbanded today.
The political parties that were disbanded are Islamic Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, Social Liberal Party, People’s Party, Maldivian National Congress, People’s Alliance, Maldivian Labour Party and the Maldivian National Party.
Akram said that the Elections Commission gave adequate time to raise the membership as per the recent amendment to the Law of Political Parties.
A three month notice was given to the political parties to increase their membership to 3000 on 6 September after the amendment brought to the Law of Political Parties in August.
There are 14 political parties registered in the Maldives. The amendment to the law says that the state would issue funding to political parties with at least 10,000 members.
