Dunya: Resolution may affect relations between EU and the Maldives

Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has said that the resolution at the EU parliament calling to seize the cargo of Maldivian businessmen close to the Maldivian Government may diminish the relationship between the Maldives and EU.

Speaking at the press conference at the Foreign Ministry today, Minister Dunya said that such a resolution was presented after the Maldives and EU were working closely after the COP 21.

The resolution at the EU parliament said that it was called for due to the increase of human rights violations in the Maldives. The resolution called to stop the trails outside the basis of justice and conduct the trial of the former President Mohamed Nasheed within the Justice System.

Foreign Minister Dunya expressed concerns about the resolution on behalf of the government.

“Inside the relationship between the Maldives and the European Union we are doing different work even now. So at a time like this, presenting a resolution like this, we believe, it is something that could diminish the relationship (between the two). And also something the Maldivian government is very concerned about.

The Ministry said that they are in contact with the EU Ambassy and doing resolution related work.

Minister Dunya said that aside from a number of false information, the resolution also calls for harsh steps against the country.

The resolution calls to give the people the right to peaceful protest as per the modern democracy. And it includes reminders to stop gang violence instead of peaceful protests.

As the Maldives is preparing to implement the death sentence, the resolution also called to bring it to a halt.

The resolution would be presented and voted on sometime today.
